Many folks have commented that the food in Hong Kong is “on another level”, but in my short time here I haven’t had very many mindblowing meals. That’s probably a combination of being busy, trying to eat locally, and not speaking any Cantonese.
Tonight changed everything. I stopped by Bun Me, a small banh mi kitchen in Sheung Wan, and had the best banh mi I’ve tasted in years. Fresh bread, warmed just enough; fresh ingredients, which included some kind of pâté and two other kinds of sliced meat; and crisply pickled vegetables. It was a heavenly combination; a revelation eaten while strolling around the neighborhood (no seats in the storefront). Perfect for lunch, or a quick meal. I recommend eating it as soon as it’s handed to you, as the warm baguette really does add a special dimension to the sandwich.
My meal was 38 HKD, including a bottle of water.
Now to get back there for breakfast…
