Greenland Taiwanese Cuisine

On Pisco’s last visit to Crystal Jade in Wan Chai, he noticed that there was another restaurant in the same shopping center in Wan Chai called Greenland Taiwanese Cuisine.  What an incongruous name, he thought.  Were there Taiwanese settlers in Greenland?  Were they related to the Inuit already there?  Did they also eat salmon?  Had their cuisines morphed into a modern fusion of Danish, Canadian, and Chinese?  Would reindeer be on the menu?

I could not find any reindeer, but the rest of the menu looked fine.

The Greenland noodles with wonton and ground beef were excellent.  The ground beef gave the dish a hearty backbone normally missing in wonton mein, and some chopped scallions added a bit of texture and color.

The deep-fried chicken wings were served fresh out of the oil; they were too hot to eat, and I stared at them longingly for a few minutes while they cooled.  They sat on a bed of chopped/pickled vegetables, which were very spicy.  They added a nice touch to the meaty wings, and gave enough heat to be noticed but not enough to make one cry.

When the heat did become a little overwhelming, a sip from a large glass of freshly-squeezed apple/carrot/ginger juice made everything aright.

All dish names are approximate.  The meal totaled around 70 HKD for two dishes and one large, juicy drink.

For a quick meal in unpretentious settings, Greenland Taiwanese Cuisine is a good bet.

Saint’s Alp Teahouse

Pisco is happy to report that Saint’s Alp Teahouse in Hong Kong (where it was founded) is every bit as good as the one in NYC. Apparently the branding has changed, so the interior is bright orange (from dark green), but the tea and snacks are as weird and vibrant as ever (toast with condensed milk? Check.).

Apparently they imported the concept from Taiwan, so there are now two food experiences that I love from there: Saint’s Alp and Din Tai Fung.
